The Musical Innertube - Volume 2, Number 198 - Jon Michael Nese

We don't mean to scare you, but a polar vortex is coming! Or maybe we DO mean to scare you. When TV says we're experiencing an atmospheric river or that a major El Nino is on its way, it sounds scary. Penn State meteorologist Jon Nese says sometimes it's serious, sometimes it's just regular weather with a fancy name.

Dr. Nese oversees the undergraduate program in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, handling a variety of duties from advising and recruiting to retention and scheduling instructors for the program.

Dr. Nese also oversees the Weather and Climate Communications Group which is responsible for the production of the Penn State Meteorology Department's weekday weather magazine show Weather World. He provides regular features for the show on Wednesday evening in a segment called WxYz (WeatherWhys) - in 2015, he was awarded a Mid-Atlantic Emmy for WxYz with his colleague Marisa Ferger. He also occasionally hosts the show and interviews Penn State faculty and prominent alumni.

Jon is a native of Steubenville, Ohio. After receiving his Ph.D at Penn State, he was a faculty member at the Beaver, University Park, and Hazleton Campuses, where he taught Meteorology, Earth Sciences, and Mathematics courses.

Prior to joining the Penn State faculty, he was chief meteorologist at the historic Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia from 1998 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, he was an on-air storm analyst at The Weather Channel.

Dr. Nese has co-authored three books: The Philadelphia Area Weather Book (with Philadelphia television meteorologist and Penn State alum Glenn Schwartz), which was awarded the 2005 Louis J.
