Prior to coming to NYU, Dr. Caplan was the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics. He has also taught at the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Center for Biomedical Ethics; the University of Pittsburgh; and Columbia University. He received his PhD from Columbia University.

Dr. Caplan is the author or editor of 35 books and more than 800 papers in peer reviewed journals. His most recent books are Vaccination Ethics and Policy (MIT Press, 2017, with Jason Schwartz) and Getting to Good: Research Integrity in Biomedicine (Springer, 2018, with Barbara Redman).

He has served on a number of national and international committees including as chair of the National Cancer Institute Biobanking Ethics Working Group; chair of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations on Human Cloning; and chair of the Advisory Committee to the Department of Health and Human Services on Blood Safety and Availability. He has also served on the Presidential Advisory Committee on Gulf War Illnesses; the Special Advisory Committee to the International Olympic Committee on Genetics and Gene Therapy; the Special Advisory Panel to the National Institutes of Mental Health on Human Experimentation on Vulnerable Subjects; the Wellcome Trust Advisory Panel on Research in Humanitarian Crises; and as the co-director of the Joint Council of Europe/United Nations Study on Trafficking in Organs and Body Parts.

Mike Hingson attended the University of California, Irvine (UCI) graduating with honors and received a Masters degree in physics; earned a secondary teaching credential from UC Irvine’s School of Teaching and Education. He was also a DJ on the campus radio station, KUCI, where he met John and Don. On KUCI, he hosted a Sunday night program featuring old radio shows.
While attending Palmdale High School where he graduated with a 3.54 grade average, Mike attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, where he rose to the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive, known as Vigil.
On September 11, 2001, MIke -- a blind man -- escaped the World Trade Center by walking down 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog, Roselle. Days later, America fell in love with Mike and Roselle and the special bond that helped them both survive one of the country’s darkest days.
Mike enjoys a successful 41-year, sales career, first in high-tech and now is selling attitudes and the adventure of life and the adventure of life and living joyfully to audiences around the world.

FRANK FERRANTE is the recipient of New York's Theatre World Award for 'Outstanding Debut,' a New York Outer Critics Circle nomination, London's Laurence Olivier Award nomination for 'Comedy Performance of the Year,' Washington D.C.'s Helen Hayes nomination and two Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. He was picked a 'top ten' theater performance by the Wall Street Journal in 2017 and in 2019 the Chicago Tribune picked him as a 'top ten' stage performance for his role in cirque's Teatro ZinZanni. Ferrante was discovered by Groucho Marx's son playwright Arthur Marx as a 22 year old drama student at USC performing An Evening With Groucho for a 1985 senior project. Arthur subsequently cast Frank to portray Groucho Marx for the heralded 1986-87 production of Arthur's Groucho: A Life in Revue that played Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre for 254 performances. Ferrante, who was 23 at the time, portrayed legendary Groucho from age 15 to 85. Morrie Ryskind who co-wrote the Marx Brothers classic films Animal Crackers and A Night at the Opera and attended Ferrante's USC show said, "Frank is the only actor aside from Groucho who delivered my lines as they were intended."

Mat Kaplan loved hosting and producing Planetary Radio for 20 years. He was just 17 when he got his first job in broadcasting, yet it wasn't until the 2002 premiere of the Society's popular, weekly podcast and public radio series that he combined his twin loves of space and radio. A Planetary Society staff member for 24 years, Mat moderates many of the Society's events and webinars. He recently served as the MC for the Society’s two-day Eclipse-O-Rama celebration in Texas.

Mat's extensive background in journalism has ranged from public radio reporter covering the political conventions to movie reviewer for an international magazine. Some may remember him as a correspondent for a pioneering national TV series about personal computers. Mat also enjoyed a 30-year career in higher education that included major television awards and recognition for service to the community. He and his wife live in the San Diego region near his two adult daughters who were raised to be citizens of the solar system.

Nick Roman has been a fixture in Southern California radio news for more than 44 years. From 1984-2004, he was the voice of news at KLON/KKJZ in Long Beach, serving as a producer, anchor, and news director. Along the way he helped create CALNET, a daily statewide news program, where he was a producer, news editor and host. From 2004-2024, he was host of All Things Considered on 89.3 KPCC.

Nick also worked for 25 years teaching broadcast journalism to students at Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton.

His love of sports has led him to file numerous stories for NPR's "Only A Game."

Mary Lyon is a veteran broadcaster and five-time Golden Mike Award winner who has anchored, reported, and written for the Associated Press Radio Network, NBC Radio "The Source," and many Los Angeles-area stations including KRTH-FM/AM, KLOS-FM, KFWB-AM, and KTLA-TV, and occasional media analyst for ABC Radio News. Mary began her career as a liberal activist with the Student Coalition for Humphrey / Muskie in 1968 and helped spearhead a regional campaign, The Power 18, to win the right to vote for 18-year-olds. She remains an advocate for liberal causes, responsibility and accountability in media, environmental education and support of the arts for children, and green living.
